(Un)Balance Design - Nothing More

This is the poster I take from Jake10684 on DevianArt. The reason I use his poster is because it looks amazing in my opinion and I like this style.

Balance, there seems to be no balance but everything doesn't seem to fall off. If we took a look closely, we can see that the poles is falling to the right, while the ground that made from the fallen building is slide to the left, those are the factor that keep the design from falling off. They are both unbalance, but together, they create the balance. There is another thing, the crow is also there to create the balance. If there is no crow or the crow is in the center of the image, the weight will all focus in the left and thus, make the design fall off. The crow is position to the right of the image to keep the weight of the design balance and prevent unnecessary white space.

The dominance in this design is the crow sitting on top the mass, it's the thing that will draw your attention at the first sight. The crow is a symbol of death, which is very suit for this idea. In this design, it seems to also present sadness and loneliness. The secondary element is the poles behind the crow, which is the things that create the unbalance of this design. For a moment, I was thinking that the poles is the dominance of this design, because when you see this design in full side and at close distance, it seems that the poles will be the one that attract most attention, but if you look from afar or resize the image into half, you will see that the crow still be the one that attract more attention. The tertiary element is the building that fall off under the crow, it's funny that the building is the one that is in the front layer but it still attract less attention than the other two and it's hard to know what is it at the first view. This maybe the purpose of the designer but it may also just a mistake.

If you look at the image in full size, you can see that the crow's pattern is black and white grid. This is a good idea, because these pattern mean forgetful and it also strengthen sadness. The designer's idea of using the stain that looks like a bloodstain is also good, but the use of color is really bad. The color make it looks like someone spill their coffee on the poster and it's completely off from the pure black color of this design. In my opinion, if the designer make the color pure black too, or dark red, it will be lot better.

The Four Element - Wind [UPDATED]

This is the design I made for wind element. I use pen tool to draw the face and and use brush to draw the hair, let's call it main design.

I try to follow the free movement of the wind but I'm not sure it's good enough.

I choose green to be the main color because green represent wind the most in my opinion, it's also the color of leaves, which is the one that show us the movement of the wind.

I use Chinese letter to make unity with my group and make the design a little bit mysterious :P. So even with different style of design, we can still connect them together.

I use simple font for the letter because I think simplicity is the best. If the font is too complicated, it will distract the attention from the main design. I make the letter behind the main design for the same reason, I also think that with a little part of it be hided under the main design, the letter look better than when it's on top.

I also use drop shadow on the main design to make the image less flat.

Update: This is the final work of our group. The black background and Chinese letter for each element bring out the unity for the whole design
